What StanfordNext Is Exploring

The details of StanfordNext are still being refined in advance of submitting the land use application to Santa Clara County later this summer. However, based on what we’ve heard from community members, campus constituencies, local leaders, and advisory group participants — and guided by Stanford’s long-term needs and priorities — StanfordNext is being planned around two fundamental considerations: Supporting Education & Research and Succeeding Together.

Nested within those are the elements that will constitute StanfordNext: future academic facilities, expanding student housing and community spaces, investing in workforce housing, advancing responsible transportation, strengthening sustainability and stewardship, and deepening Stanford’s role as a regional partner.

Supporting Education & Research

StanfordNext supports the university’s future as a leading teaching and research institution through a plan that would allow the university to create spaces and opportunities to advance frontier research and innovation, build facilities that support the Stanford community, expand access to a Stanford education, and house more students.

To provide these facilities and opportunities, StanfordNext is evaluating both the construction of new facilities and the modernization of existing facilities. Any new academic buildings would follow adopted campus planning principles and design standards to ensure they are visually integrated into the character of the campus.

Succeeding Together

StanfordNext will bring a strong focus to transportation, housing, sustainability, infrastructure, stewardship, community partnership, and accountability. These ongoing commitments ensure that the university’s future academic facilities are paired with clear benefits for the public, responsible mitigation, and an ongoing partnership with the community. Stanford recognizes that its campus is more than a university and employer, it is also a place where community members gather, explore open space, attend cultural and athletic events, and connect with their neighbors. 

As StanfordNext takes shape, the university is focused on remaining an active and collaborative regional partner while strengthening the campus as a welcoming resource for both Stanford and the broader community.
