StanfordNext is the university’s long-term plan, currently in development, for addressing future academic, housing, transportation, sustainability, and infrastructure needs on existing campus lands. By planning for all of these needs together, StanfordNext empowers the university to advance its mission while serving as a collaborative partner across the region.
A New Land Use Permit to Guide Future Development
The StanfordNext planning process will shape an application to Santa Clara County for a new long-term General Use Permit (GUP). This permit would guide future development on the core Stanford campus within Santa Clara County. The application is being designed to align with state, county, and local priorities while ensuring that Stanford remains a global leader in research, education, and innovation.
Key Components of StanfordNext
The StanfordNext plan for the university’s core campus in Santa Clara County will:
- Locate new facilities within the university’s existing academic campus; the plan includes no development in the foothills and no projects in neighboring communities
- Facilitate world-class education, research, and programming that contributes to the economy, health, and quality of life of communities both globally and locally
- Create much-needed affordable workforce housing
- Maintain the sustainability, character, green space, and accessibility of the current campus
- Result in no net new commute trips to or from campus
